Zedd (2) – Week Of March 10, 2018

Hey guys! I hope you all had a good week. Unfortunately it seems like there have been issues in the comment section again. So this week I'm just going to start seriously deleting every unnecessary that doesn't make sense to me. If that doesn't work, then I'll turn comment moderation back on next week, which I really don't want to have to do. I want you guys to able to have conversations without me having to monitor everything. But I'll do it if I have to. I'll give it one more week though and we'll see how things are afterward. New Entrants
~ With the highest debut of the week, we have Meghan Trainor with No Excuses. I talked about this last week when it debuted on Hit-Bound. But to sum it up, I think the song is okay. It's not enough to make up for the shit she has released in the past like All About That Bass, Dear Future Husband, and No. Me Too I liked in a guilty pleasure kind of way. But it was still not a good song. I like the production to No Excuses to some extent. It has a nice groove it and it's a catchy song. But the songwriting still smells like typical Meghan Trainor and it lacks any originality. She continues to assume that all guys are assholes that don't respect or know how to treat a lady. I get that she's a feminist and all. But we don't have to empower women by putting men down. It makes no sense. It's like her shaming skinny women in All About That Bass in an attempt to promote body image. Frankly, I don't know why anyone would want to date her. She seems like such a rude person, particularly towards men. And she has to have all these rules and guidelines for what wants in a guy as shown in Dear Future Husband. I honestly just can't get on board with her and her messages. Like I said, No Excuses is catchy, which is why it's not red. But I can definitely see myself putting this in red in the future. For now though, it's okay. I can't see it lasting that long despite it debuting up in the Top 20.

~ Next we have This Is Me by Keala Settle, which is from the soundtrack for The Greatest Showman. The soundtrack has been high on the iTunes chart for quite some time, showing that this is kind of a big deal. I think this song is fantastic. It's a great self-empowerment anthem. I love the lyrical content. The production is amazing from start to end. The song starts off nice and slow and soon turns into this anthem that's hard to resist. Keala's voice is phenomenal. She's one of the best singers I've heard in a while. Every time she hits those high notes, it gives me chills. I thought she did a great job performing it at the Oscars last weekend. It is a little different to have a song from a musical on the countdown. But a lot of times, different is good. This is true talent. It's easily one of the best songs out there currently and I'm glad it's been gaining some popularity. I'm really hoping this does reasonably well here. But either way, at least the song is eligible for my Top 45 songs of 2018.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Portugal. The Man – Live In The Moment
  • Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me (DEBUT)
  • Dustin Atlas/Erin Bowman – Fake Friends
  • Post Malone/Ty Dolla $ign – Psycho
  • Welshly Arms – Legendary
  • Rudimental/Jess Glynne/Macklemore/Dan Caplen – These Days
  • Alice Merton – No Roots
  • Khalid – Young, Dumb, and Broke
  • Dua Lipa – IDGAF (DEBUT)
  • Foster The People – Sit Next To Me (DEBUT)
  • Marshmello/Anne-Marie – Friends
  • Niall Horan – On The Loose
  • Thirty Seconds To Mars – Walk On Water
  • Bazzi – Mine

~ Very similar to Walk On Water, Tell Me You Love Me has been around for months at this point and I actually included it in my Year-End post where I listed the twenty-five best songs that failed to make it to Hits 1. This song is fantastic and one of Demi Lovato's best songs in a while. One of the reasons I disliked Sorry Not Sorry was because it didn't sound like her. But I feel like she found herself here. Everything about this song works. The production, the horns, the lyrics, and especially the vocals. She really shows off her voice here. I'm glad she was able to redeem herself and I'm hoping this makes it debut on the countdown soon.

~ Dua Lipa returns with IDGAF. I think this is a step down from New Rules. I don't find this very interesting. Then again, I've really only listened to it once. So it could potentially grow on me. But for now, it's really only okay. It's kind of boring in my opinion.

~ I haven't heard anything from Foster The People ever since Pumped Up Kicks many years ago. Despite that, I'm glad they have another song on here. It's nice to hear from these guys again. I think Sit Next To Me is a very enjoyable song. I like the production and the vocals are good. This could very well be better than Pumped Up Kicks. But time will tell on that. For now, it's a really good song and I hope it debuts soon.

~ We lost Woman by Kesha this week. But considering how much airplay it got this past week, I don't think it's gone for good. It'll most likely make its way onto the countdown next week.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me
2. Rudimental/Jess Glynne/Macklemore/Dan Caplen – These Days
3. Thirty Seconds To Mars – Walk On Water
4. Foster The People – Sit Next To Me
5. Dustin Atlas/Erin Bowman – Fake Friends

This Is Blurbs
~ Hailee Steinfeld/Florida Georgia Line – Let Me Go has hit a new peak at #2 this week. Because of our current #1 song, I'd be perfectly okay with this song hitting #1 soon. It's been here for a while at this point. But for some reason, I still love it. It's a catchy song and everyone sounds great. I'd personally be happy with this at #1.

~ Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line – Meant To Be is now back in the Top 10. This is still one of the biggest songs currently. So I'm glad it's still doing somewhat well here unlike New Rules. Hits 1 is probably just hesitant to have two songs with Florida Georgia Line in the Top 10. But honestly, I think both collabs are really good. I know some disagree with me on this one. But I mainly just like it because of Bebe Rexha.

~ Eminem/Ed Sheeran – River is still barely hanging around in the Top 20. I still love this song and I wish it could do better here. The Top 20 is decent. But it's the first song with Ed Sheeran that hasn't hit the Top 10 yet. It's also the first song with Ed Sheeran since Don't that hasn't hit #1. Hopefully that motivates Hits 1 to bump it up.

~ Imagine Dragons – Believer and Kelly Clarkson – Love So Soft have both dropped out the Top 30 for the first time in seemingly forever. The latter should've left a long time ago. This song was never a big hit and it's annoying that it did well here because it's one of Clarkson's weakest songs, if not her weakest. The former I'm still okay with. Frankly, I want to see this song last a year. We're not too far away from that day.

~ Of course Hits 1 is underrating Justin Timberlake/Chris Stapleton – Say Something. This is currently #11 on iTunes. I get that it's not really that huge elsewhere. But I don't know why it's not in the Top 20 at the very least. The voters need to start getting their shit together. The song is fantastic.

~ As far as the exits go, Animal was bound to be underrated. It's unfortunate because I actually liked that song. We also lost What About Us, which was a huge favorite of mine ranking at #4 for my favorite songs of 2017. I'm glad this song was successful, hit #1, and found a spot on Hits 1's Top 45 of 2017. P!nk truly impressed me with this one. I still love it and I probably always will. You will be greatly missed.

As one final note, I found this interesting article linked here that discusses why The Middle is not good. This isn't entirely why I dislike it because it's from the perspective of country listeners and it talks mainly about Maren Morris. But I still thought it was an interesting read and there are some points in there that I certainly agree with. So feel free to check it out.

PREACH! I’m glad someone agrees with me that this is one of the best songs out there right now.

    2. I’m actually really digging this new 5SOS song. I think it’s catchy. It’s not as good as a couple of their other songs but I like it for what it is.

    3. That throwback pick.

  4. Nice Post man!

Unfortunately for me, I had a power outage for almost three days :(

I personally think that Justin Timberlake has gone down in his music, though Say Something is good and is better than Filthy

" It's also the first song with Ed Sheeran since Don't that hasn't hit #1"

Wow... shows the love of Ed Sheeran from Hits1. That was like 4 years ago!

I briefly read he article on The Middle and I can agree with that. The song should not be classified as a country song, but neither pop. I would put it in the dance/EDM kinda. I guess it's a mix of pop and EDM.

Yeah I don't like it because it's pop-country garbage, and it doesn't fit well with the trap percussion and F.G.L. basically bro-countrying everything up, while Bebe Rexha delivers one of her worst vocal performances to date. And this is why I don't trust Hits 1, they call themselves "the 45 biggest hits in North America, yet the biggest song in the U.S. and Canada, God's Plan isn't even on here. I get it, it's a pop station, but would it kill them to have some more diversity and more rap/hip-hop? It's one thing to have alternative/rock songs, but this is just pathetic to me. This is why I prefer looking at the Hot 100, sales, airplay and streaming charts more and more.

    3. That I'm sure you and Adrian will be happy with, but not me. Of course America loves mediocre country music. It's pretty sad that this is Bebe Rexha's highest peaking single. :/

Though, I'm more happy about Rockstar getting kicked out of the Top 10. And The Middle replacing it? More good news there!

    4. I have a number of problems with this.

One, Meant To Be is trash, it's the worst parts of pop and country with horrible trap elements that is not meant to be.

Two, Rockstar is great, and you haters are missing out.

Finally, Perfect needs to GO AWAY!

      Delete
    5. I don’t HATE Rockstar, kinda in-between on it for the most part but I can’t say I’m sad to see it off. And I’m totally fine with Perfect still being there. But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t at least somewhat out of spite. :P

  21. So, there are some things about the article regarding The Middle that I want to mention.

First off, I can see where you get your point across. Sure, the song isn't really country either. But I knew from the beginning that it was going to be an EDM song. I'm quite surprised that some classify this as a country song when it really isn't.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I did listen to Zedd's other singles that you mentioned last month (Addicted To A Memory and Papercut) and I agree that they're both really good songs. As I mentioned when the song made its debut, his other singles like Stay The Night and Clarity, along with some off of True Colors are his best work. So yeah.

    1. Not helping is that many Maren Morris fans are disappointed that this became a real hit because Zedd and nothing else while My Church and Crabing You with Thomas Rhett came short of the Year-End lists for 2016 and 2017 respectively.

    2. * Craving. Gah phone keyboard

      Delete
    3. 80s Mercedes should have been a hit, and Craving You was another pop-country garage clone like T-Shirt that Thomas Rhett keep churning out in 2016-2017.

      Delete
    4. I too wished that 80s Mercedes was a bigger hit because Maren Morris showed what she is truly capable of. It's too bad that the audience doesn't feel the same way, until The Middle came along this year.

And on that note, while we can all agree that The Middle doesn't really live up to Zedd's best work, it was something that grabbed my attention when it first came out and I've been hooked on it ever since. I've said this before, but I'm just happy to see Maren Morris get a country cross-over hit because she pretty much shines all throughout the song to me. That's just how I feel.

Also, speaking of Zedd, I mentioned this in the Blurbs in my post. Kid Kelly said during the introduction of There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back that Shawn Mendes was spotted at an Oscars after-party with Hailee Steinfeld and Zedd. He also mentioned that there could potentially be a collaboration coming up. I wonder how some will feel about this, since Zedd, as Adrian said before, is on the path of selling out and going mainstream, what with songs such as Starving, Stay (with Alessia Cara), and Get Low (with Liam Payne) not to his liking, the former two in which he used to love but ultimately realized that they're not good, at least not to him.

  22. That article about The Middle is complete s**t. Just because you hate it doesn’t mean you have to rant about it. There are people (such as me) who love The Middle so keep your feelings to yourself.

    1. Brady, I'm not trying to be that guy, but this is his opinion. He can rant about it if he wants to. So, don't waste your time arguing with him about it.

    2. This is not so much a rant. It’s more so further explanation as to why I dislike it and it shows that there are people out there who feel the same as I do. This blog is made for me to give my opinion and my thoughts. So no, I will not, “Keep my feelings to myself.” This is a music site that is almost entirely opinion-based. If you get offended by my comments and criticisms, I’m sorry but I’m not changing the way I do things around here.

  33. Wow. Right After I take a break, Hits1 brings really good songs.

Gods Plan (10/10) - I am actually really liking this new Drake. I also like Diplomatic Immunity

Delicate (10/10) - One of the really good songs off reputation. Some of her other songs on the album were mediocre, but I think this one is better than ...Ready For It?

Alone (?/10) - Have not heard yet

I don't think River is leaving. Seems too high for it to leave, plus three songs are entering the countdown...

I'm not sold on it yet, I mean I doubt she would let this happen when her career has only just started and is already at its peak and all. 49. I'm curious to know what everyone's opinions are on these songs that we're released today:

    Chainsmokers - Everybody Hates Me
Kygo/Miguel - Remind Me To Forget

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Everybody Hates Me is okay. I feel like the Chainsmokers have been getting less appealing lately. None of their latest singles come close to being as good as their previous hits. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing memorable. (4/10)

Remind Me To Forget is pretty good. But I may be biased because I really like Kygo. He has definitely done better in the past. But I still think this song is somewhat unique in a way. I think Miguel was a good fit. The production isn’t entirely original. But I still enjoy the song to some extent. (7.5/10)

      Delete
    2. I think the Chainsmokers have gone from a memorable and interesting EDM with weird drops, to a generic, one with an insufferable personality.

      Delete
    3. With their current direction they're in, it's a bad sign. Maybe if they go back to making music similar to Closer or Something Just Like This, then they would continue to be more appealing.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you for the most part Adrian. Everybody Hates Me probably sounds most like their older music out of their last 3 singles but still isn't even close to as good as Closer, Paris, or Something Just Like This.

I think Remind Me To Forget is really good and catchy and definitely has the Kygo feel to it. It might not be as good as It Ain't Me or Stargazing but it's still really good and catchy.

  51. Also, BREAKING NEWS in the world of NCAA:

UMBC has just made history by defeating Virginia, the No. 16 seed in March Madness beating the No. 1 seed. This is a feat that has never happened before. Not only that, but it wasn't even much of a close game, ending 74-54. After the game was tied at halftime, they took control and basically walked away with it. That'd be like if the 2007-08 Patriots (who were a hair away from a 100% perfect season but choked in the Super Bowl to the Giants) losing to the Browns in a blowout.

    2. We have 4 debuts this week. Delicate is definitely the best debut of the week. Done For Me is pretty good. I'm not a fan of God's Plan or Alone however.

We lost 4 songs this week. On The Loose, Friends, and Young, Dumb, & Broke will all most likely debut on the countdown this week. However, we may be saying goodbye to Legendary for good as it did not have any airplay this week.

    3. Man, I was growing into Legendary.

    River (Whoa there!)
    Sick Boy
    Rockstar (Good riddance)
    Miss You

    2. One Foot is #2, Whatever It Takes is in the Top 10, and Thunder dropped big time. Some good things happened this week.

    3. Yeah, this week wasn’t bad.

    4. What would have made this better is if One Foot was a full-fledged top 10 hit like Shut Up And Dance was 3 years ago. Same goes for Woman, Let Me Go, Good Old Days, and Beautiful Trauma.

    5. Whoa! This isn't the actual countdown is it? If not this is like that one week where the countdown had so much activity that I thought they were on drugs or something.

    6. Also wow it is actually Believer's 1-year anniversary. Not complaining though, it's one of my favorite songs of last year (I'm talking better than Thunder).

    7. Yes it is the countdown lol.

And this is why streaming needs to be nerf'd because America seems willing to let XXXtestmypatience get a top 10 hit with how big it's streaming it has now. And we have a bunch of new songs from his album or mixtape debut at well. Someone kill this guy's music with fire and fury.

Also I don't care about that Lil Dicky and Chris Brown song it just sucks.
