2018 Super Bowl Halftime Show: Reactions and Thoughts

This might be a brand new series where I just voice my reactions and thoughts on certain music-related things, usually performances. Last week, I did a Reactions and Thoughts post for the Grammys. Now I'm going to talk about the Halftime Show Performance for the 52nd Super Bowl.

Before I get into that, I just want to quickly talk about the performance of the National Anthem from P!nk. I thought she sounded really good for the most part. She wasn't pitch perfect, but she was sick with the flu. She already has my respect for continuing with her performance because if I had the flu, I wouldn't want to leave my bed, let alone perform for millions of people. She still sounded pretty good and though it wasn't perfect, I was pleased with it. I don't expect perfection out of anyone. I think people over-criticize some things and want them to be perfect. A good example is the halftime show performance, which I will get into right now.

The halftime show performance was done by Justin Timberlake this year. This is nothing new to him. He performed during the halftime show for the Super Bowl in 2004 with Janet Jackson, which featured the controversial wardrobe malfunction in which Timberlake exposed Jackson's breast for about half a second. As far as what I think, I don't think this was intentional. I think it was just an accident. These things happen. I won't go any further since that's a whole other topic. But despite this, they allowed Timberlake to perform again this year. Some people didn't like this and there were mixed reactions when it was announced that he would be the halftime performer. Though I don't usually like repeats, I think Justin Timberlake is a really good performer, so I was okay with him. Leading up to the big performance, JT released his fifth studio album, Man Of The Woods. If you read my last post, you'd know that I thought the album was okay overall. Filthy was definitely a single that had people mixed, including me. It's grown on me a little bit, but I still have some mixed thoughts on it. I compared it to Perfect Illusion by Lady Gaga in my last post as it's the big lead single before the Super Bowl performance that had some people mixed. But overall, I wasn't too impressed with the album.

Of course the performance opened up with Filthy, which I guess was expected. Part of me told me he wouldn't perform it for some reason since it's such a weird song. But he did and it was okay. I guess it was good way to kick things off. Then he performed Rock Your Body, which is one of my favorite songs from him. I really enjoyed this part. I liked his dance moves and he really got the crowd going, which is what makes him a good performer. Also, I love the song, so that may have had an impact on what I thought of the performance. But I liked it. Then he did a little snippet of SeƱorita, which led into SexyBack, another huge favorite of mine. Definitely one of his best songs that just had to be performed. Again, he had some great moves here and I thought he did a nice job on the vocals. He managed to keep me entertained. It was energetic and fun. I liked the backup dancers. Again, I don't know if me loving the song is what made me enjoy this. But either way, I thought he did well here. Immediately after, he did My Love, yet another favorite of mine and one of the best from FutureSex/LoveSounds. He really brought the energy here and had the crowd going. His voice was really good. Once again, I liked the backup dancers. I was thoroughly entertained. Following this, he did Cry Me A River, which was a massive hit from Justified. I don't love this one as much as the other three (Rock Your Body, SexyBack, and My Love), so I wasn't as into this part. But I still like the song and I thought his vocals were good here. I really liked the choreography. He still made it energetic and fun. After this, he performed Suit & Tie, which was the big lead single from The 20/20 Experience. I like the song, though I don't love it. The performance of it was okay. I liked the setup of it with the big marching band in the background. I also really liked the dance moves. But I would've liked some more vocals from JT here. I get that the dancing with the mic stand prevented that. But it didn't sound as good with just the backup vocals. Following that was a performance of Until The End Of Time, which I liked. I like how he stripped it down to him and the piano. His voice sounded good. This then led into a performance of I Would Die 4 U with a pre-recorded video of Prince projecting. I really liked this and the fact that he did a tribute to Prince. I thought it was really nice. As we got closer to the end, he did Mirrors, one of his biggest hits. His vocals were good. I really liked this part. The setup was cool. It's my personal favorite song and I was pleased with the performance. And to finish it off, he did his big 2016 hit, Can't Stop The Feeling. He definitely ended things off on a positive note with such a fun jam. I enjoyed it. It was very colorful and I liked the dancers. And that boy is really lucky. But I thought that was a great way to end the show.

Overall, I thought this halftime show was enjoyable. I've seen a lot of criticism and honestly it feels like some people try to find reasons to hate on things. I'm sure some people have legitimate reasons as to why they disliked it. But I enjoyed it. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was one of the best. JT didn't exactly top Lady Gaga's halftime show last year. But I thought it was good. It wasn't perfect by any means, but I don't expect perfection. When not comparing this to other halftime shows, this was really good and I feel like the people that disliked this didn't like it because it didn't live up to other halftime show performances from previous years. A lot of work still went into this and I'm impressed with anyone that can put on a show like this. It was fun and enjoyable. Like I said, Justin Timberlake is a great performer and one of the best male artists of this decade. While this performance was not one of the best, I enjoyed it for what it was and I appreciate the amount of work that went into it. He did a good job in my eyes. Timberlake is one of my favorite artists, so I may be somewhat biased and I kind of went into the performance assuming that it would be really good. So my opinion may not be worth much, but I liked it and I thought I should just put that out there since I've seen a lot of negative thoughts on the show he put on.

Feel free to watch it on JT's official Vevo YouTube account: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6xUgawDQB0

If I had to rate it, I would give it a 3.5/5 (or a 7/10), which is a B according to my grading scale. It was good, there's no doubt about that. It wasn't amazing, but I enjoyed it and I think Timberlake did a very nice job. Keep in mind, this was all just my opinion. I hope you enjoyed.

  2. Second. Nice post. I felt like it was kind of lazy for the most part. I couldn't really hear him that good to be honest. I didn't like some of the song choices though. I wished he did more of his newer stuff then just depending on his older music.

    1. I can understand that. Though it's his older classics that almost everyone knows and likes, especially with how mixed people are on his new album. I personally liked the song choices. Every song he did was pretty much a favorite of mine (with the exception of maybe Suit & Tie).

      12. I don't see the big deal about this song. It's an average Migos song about nothing but drugs. If this would stay away from mainstream that would be great.
      16. This is pretty good. I hope to see success from it.

      8. Cardi and Nicki especially are the bets parts of that song, even if it is boring long and underwhelming.
      12. It' more catchy and upbeat than literally any of their other songs. I mean, it was written and produced by PHARRELL WILLIAMS!

    6. 5. I like it as well.

      12. What Miles said. His production is what makes me love Lemon and 1000.

    7. 1. America, stop streaming any Drake music released after 2012!
      8. Not to mention that the ad-libs make up an entire quarter of the song. A QUARTER.
      12. Just because Pharrell produced it doesn't mean I have to like it. Maybe if you put a good rapper in there, like Kendrick Lamar or something, it wouldn't actually be that bad.

Dylan: Why? I've met plenty of people who love that song.

    8. I just didn't expect you to like it. That's all. I think it is decent.

    9. 1. Well unfortunately, Drake isn't going away anytime soon. So, we'll have to learn to put up with his music. And I can't say I'm too fond of this one. Not bad, but he's done better.

      2. Too bad they decided to not count BeyoncƩ anymore. I still like it, though.

      3. I'm hoping this can get to #1 someday over God's Plan.

      4. I still like this.

      5. Definitely with Parker on this one. Blech. Thankfully, it's losing steam elsewhere. So, I'm hoping it continues its downward trajectory.

      6. Good to see this one still hanging on.

      7. Very happy for Dua Lipa. I'm glad she's got a hit here in the states.

      8. Can this go away soon?

      9. A step up from Filthy, and there's more singing going on.

      10. Sure, I still enjoy this. Stay as long as you like.

      12. Haven't heard this yet.

      16. This one's grown on me more. An interesting collab that turned out pretty well.

      18. Same as #12.

      23. Definitely with Parker on this one. Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Maren Morris sounds amazing all throughout. Please let this be a hit!

      26. No opinion on this one yet.

      32. A step down from Havana. Camila can do better.

    2. Yeah, when Billboard makes these best/ranked lists, their #1 picks tend to be insanely predictable, based on the success of the songs (see: declaring Sorry the best song off of Purpose, Perfect for Made In The AM, Closer for The Chainsmokers… The list goes on and on. And with Humble, it’s not that people hate the song, they just don’t think it’s worthy of being Kendrick’s first #1 as a solo act.

  25. Part 1/10 of my YE review (#100-91):

    100. The Fighter - I can't remember much about the country songs on here, just because I only listened to them once for the rankdown. But I do remember that this was my favorite discovery out of the country songs I listened to. (4-Good)

    99. Look At Me - I don't think anyone liked this song, except for a couple idiot 12-year-olds who will die for this kind of music. And frankly, I don't want to get that much into it just because it would take a while for me to list everything wrong with it. But in short, there are many modern rap songs that suck because of an ear-rape type beat, and it all started with this song. X sounds like he's bragging, although the lyrics are bad and therefore nothing to brag about. And not to mention that this guy is a criminal, so he has no business in making it big in the music industry. 2017 wasn't that good of a year for music, and this song showed it. (-1-Worst on the list)

    98. Do Re Mi - I don't hate Blackbear, but this is not the good side of him. This song is just boring, and I can't remember anything else since this was so forgettable. (1-Bad)

    97. What Lovers Do - I like this song, although when I think of good pop songs from 2017, this doesn't come to mind. SZA isn't awful, and the production is kinda cool. Not much else to say. (4-Good)

    96. Havana - Although it's faded on me quite a bit since the beginning, this is a really good song. The chorus is really good and Camila does a great job of showing off her vocal abilities. The song itself is catchy, too. And surprisingly, Young Thug doesn't suck! The only other thing I can think of is that trumpet at the end that sounds very good. I didn't expect it to sneak in this list, but I'm not complaining. (5-Great)

    95. Everyday We Lit - Look, this song doesn't suck, just because I appreciate the guys' effort to make a club banger. However, they kind of failed. This is nothing more than generic brag rap, and you can tell that by the title. PnB Rock isn't bad, but YFN Lucci is just mumbling the whole time and makes the effort a lazy one. This is one of the better trap songs on here, but not that it's good. (1-Bad)

    94. Small Town Boy - Another forgettable country song I remember nothing about. I can't remember liking it, but I can't remember hating it, so its score goes in the middle. (3-Decent)

    93. I Get The Bag - Here we go with the first of two songs on this list with an infamous masturbating lyric. I hate the Migos, and they're lazier than ever in this song's chorus. Gucci Mane isn't much better. And guess who produced it, Metro Boomin, the ringleader of the trap music killers. It's no surprise that he couldn't at least make the song a little bit better. While this isn't the worst song on this list, there isn't much that could be made worse about this disaster of a song, if you even call it a song. (0-Crap)

    92. Treat You Better - Everyone hates this, and I probably should too. I keep getting bashed for it, but I am fully aware of its hate. I understand why critics slammed it, but that doesn't stop me from liking it. It's just a catchy song to me, and while Shawn might have tried a little too hard on those vocals, they are overall pretty good. The chorus isn't legendary, but it's the best part of the song. I wouldn't say this is a guilty pleasure, because it is the kind of music I tend to like, but I really should hate this, but I don't. (5-Great)

    91. No Promises - It sucks that I didn't get into this until late into the year, because I really wanted to root for it while it was successful. I don't necessarily think Demi Lovato was the right choice for most of the vocals, but the male voice (Idk who he is) is great and makes the chorus great. Although the drop could have more to it, it's pretty fun and also adds to the song. This made the list as a sleeper, and I'm very happy about it. (5-Great)

    Score so far: 27/50

    2. Yeah, it's definitely a step up. I don't know if anyone got through to him or if he just needed that long break, but I'm not complaining. After how he was completely immune to anyone who didn't agree with him, this is a refreshing change.

  27. Part 2:

    90. Down - At best, this song is forgettable. It sounds lazy in most parts, but catchy in others. I don't have much else to say, other than that I didn't expect this to be on this list. (2-Mediocre)

    89. Malibu - For Miley Cyrus, this is impressive. However, when compared so certain other pop songs from this year, it's not a standout. Just forgettable, and it could have more to it, that's all. (4-Good)

    88. Water Under The Bridge - While being nowhere near Adele's best, this was a nice song that was good when it was around. It is forgettable, though, and I can say that I prefer the other 25 singles, Send My Love and Hello. But this was nice to have around and as a hit. (4-Good)

    87. Sign of the Times - My only problem with this song is that it's pretty long, and there are a few parts that don't have anything to them. But that chorus is amazing, and while Harry hasn't had the best solo career out of the former One Direction members, this song is really good. (5-Great)

    86. Slippery - Let's go ahead and get out of the way the fact that Culture is one of the worst albums of 2017. All of the songs on there are snoozefests about nothing but drugs, hoes, money, etc., with very lazy efforts from Quavo on top of that. This defines Slippery, which literally has no production, because there's so many open spots. And I don't even know what 95% of the lyrics mean, either because they're either mumbled or some gang slang that no one will understand. And look who's featured? The all-important Gucci Mane! Doesn't he just make the song so much better? No? Okay then. (0-Crap)

    85. Swalla - I'm pretty sure that in the following years, this song will unfortunately listed under "Catchy songs we forgot we loved". And for Jason Derulo's comeback single, I'm impressed. The beat is very well-produced, and Derulo's vocals fit well with it. Ty Dolla $ign doesn't suck, and Nicki Minaj kind of added to the song. And not to mention that the chorus used an awesome Ol' Dirty Bastard song as the base. I feel like it should've been bigger, because it's Jason Derulo, but if it's on this list, I won't complain. (5-Great)

    84. What About Us - Yet another forgettable sleeper that snuck in at the last minute. I don't know if I love this song, because I'm not that familiar, but the chorus sticks with me, because it's really good. It doesn't match any of her old stuff, of course, but it's pretty good. (4-Good)

    83. Both - Gucci Mane at his worst. Drake providing a lazy chorus that is not his style. A Metro Boomin production that only makes the song worse. We've got all of the elements here for something pretty bad. NEXT! (0-Crap)

    82. Starving - This song is when I started to really get into Hailee Steinfeld. She has some pretty awesome vocal abilities. Adding EDM as a lot of the foundation works pretty well, too, as I think it fits Hailee's style. However, this song is pretty hated for reasons other than overplay. For some songs I like that others hate, I can definitely see the hate, but for this song I don't see it. This really is a great song, and just think that if Hailee didn't start to get good in this style, we might not have some awesome songs like Let Me Go hanging around. (5-Great)

    81. Drowning - Honestly, A Boogie isn't that bad of a rapper. I like his efforts to make his songs into stories, and while he's nowhere near the old-school level, you gotta give this guy some respect. However, that doesn't mean that all of his songs are good, and this one doesn't fall in that category. The production isn't bad, I don't mind what A Boogie has to offer, but there is still one thing: Kodak Black. I don't know anyone who likes him, and that's good because no one should like him. His verse on this song is so bad, this song that could've been really good was totally ruined. Thanks a lot. (0-Crap)

    Score so far: 56/100

  28. So apparently the radio cut of Filthy doesn't play that intro anymore. I heard it on Venus while I was out driving tonight and the intro was cut out, then I heard it on Hits 1 EXACTLY after and it was the same. Yet both stations did keep the bridge, which is a copy/paste of the intro. Maybe it was for time shortening, but still odd.
