Charlie Puth (1) – Week Of August 26, 2017

So the MTV Video Music Awards took place Sunday night. I feel like Katy Perry did a pretty mediocre job at hosting, but that's just me. I thought she was kind of annoying. I didn't watch all of the performances because I was doing homework at the same time, so I had to mute the TV several times so I could focus. But they seemed pretty good for the most part. Out of the ones I saw, I thought Logic had the best performance. It was one of the most moving performances I've seen in a while on these music award shows. I thought he, Alessia Cara, and Khalid all sounded fantastic. And that speech at the end was incredible. It's about time we have a rap artist speaking some sense (aside from Eminem, Kendrick, and Macklemore). Before we get to this week's Fresh 45, here are the songs we're saying goodbye to this week.

New Entrants
~ First up, we have the return of Macklemore without Ryan Lewis this time around. You may remember them somewhat because they helped make 2013 a good year for music bringing in the catchy hits (Thrift Shop), the upbeat anthems (Can't Hold Us), and the slower, more meaningful songs that really made an impact (Same Love). Macklemore brings in Skylar Grey, who has made numerous appearances as a featured artist that I'm pretty sure made the countdown at some point in time. She's done a few collabs with rapper Eminem that I know for sure were on the countdown at some point. But aside from that, I have enjoyed her music and her guest appearances for a while now. I really like her voice. As far as the song goes, I think it's pretty cool. Macklemore's verses flow just as smoothly as they did before. But I think Skylar's chorus is the biggest attention-grabber. She is easily the best fit for this song. Overall, I really like it. It's different and it's cool. Hopefully it does well.

~ Next we have Imagine Dragons debuting with Thunder, which while being undoubtedly better than Believer, I still have mixed feelings about. Obviously, it's a different sound for them since they're supposedly "evolving" as guessed by the title of the album. It is a catchy song. That chorus gets stuck in my head pretty easily. I've never heard the word "thunder" said so many times in one song. But it's pretty basic. There's nothing that makes it stand out from the rest of the songs on the countdown. Also, the voice that repeatedly says "thunder" in the chorus is really annoying. Ultimately, the song doesn't really catch my attention until the final chorus. Overall, it's nothing amazing. I did put it in green just because I would consider it good in comparison to Believer. But it's still nothing that stands out from their discography. I actually went through their new album and there are some pretty good songs on there like Walking The Wire. I feel like that would be a much better choice for a single. The problem with Thunder is that it's not a memorable song. No one will remember this in, say a year or two. I don't know. Maybe I'm over-analyzing it. Like I said, it's in green right now, but it can easily change to blue.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list:

  • The Revivalists – Wish I Knew You
  • Selena Gomez – Fetish
  • PRETTYMUCH  – Would You Mind (DEBUT)
  • Justin Bieber/BloodPop – Friends (DEBUT)
  • Rita Ora – Your Song
  • Ed Sheeran – Galway Girl
  • Andy Grammer – Give Love
  • Harry Styles – Two Ghosts
  • Cheat Codes/Demi Lovato – No Promises
  • Halsey – Bad At Love
  • Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still
  • Zedd/Liam Payne – Get Low
  • Sabrina Carpenter – Why
  • The All-American Rejects – Sweat
  • Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do (DEBUT)

~ New to Hit-Bound, we have PRETTYMUCH, who I'm guessing are some rising boy band. Would You Mind is pretty catchy. I do like hearing from newer boy bands. If I had to compare them to another boy band, it would probably be The Wanted. The vocals aren't amazing, but they have this cool vibe that is something I could probably get into.

~ Justin Bieber is back as a lead artist. The vocals are pretty strong on this one. He has a very good voice and he shows it reasonably well on this track. The drop isn't that exciting. The song is also slightly repetitive. But that's really my only criticism. Otherwise, it's a good song. I don't think it'll be as big as Despacito. It's not even really Top 5 material. The only reason it's in my Top 5 for Hit-Bound right now is because we have a huge lack of music that I think is amazing. NONE of the songs currently on Hit-Bound I would consider amazing.

~ And of course, the huge return of Taylor Swift. I'll talk more about this when it debuts. But for now, I'll just say right off the bat that it's nowhere near her best work. But there's something about it that just pulls me in.

~ While we do have more good songs than bad ones currently on Hit-Bound, none of the good songs stand out as anything amazing. So The All-American Rejects are currently at the top. It's been a grower these past couple of weeks. But it's nothing I can't live without.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. The All-American Rejects – Sweat
2. Ed Sheeran – Galway Girl
3. Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do
4. Justin Bieber/BloodPop – Friends
5. Cheat Codes/Demi Lovato – No Promises

Lightning Then The Blurbs
~ I definitely didn't see that #1 coming. But hey, I'm not complaining. It's a good song. I certainly prefer it over three of other songs currently in the Top 5. So as of right now, it can stay there as long as it likes.

~ Here we go again with the continuous jumps and drops coming from Ed Sheeran's two songs. They're continuously jumping in and out of the Top 10 replacing each other. It's actually getting a little annoying. Shape Of You shouldn't even still be this high.

~ And just like that, Hailee Steinfeld – Most Girls is back in the Top 15. That drop obviously didn't last very long. If only the same thing could happen to Wild Thoughts.

~ Meanwhile, Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee/Justin Bieber – Despacito is all of a sudden out of the Top 20. So much for the biggest song in the country actually hitting #1.

~ Julia Michaels – Uh Huh thankfully dropped out of the Top 30, with Issues falling into the Bottom 5. I would love if both of these songs just leave. There was never anything good about either of them.

~ You gotta love how Train – Play That Song is still here. And I still haven't gotten sick of it because I haven't listened to it in a really long time. So I would love to see how much longer it can hold out.

~ This week, both of the Cyrus sisters had a song departing. Only difference is that one was actually very good and I wish it had become a bigger hit (Malibu), while the other was mediocre at best (Stay Together). Noah, you are nowhere near as talented as Miley. So just stop now.

I'm also ready for Issues to leave too, but whatever.

    1. That's right. Let's get Uh Huh out of the countdown.

    2. Meh, both are the most mediocre things I've heard.

      Delete
    3. While I agree completely on Uh Huh, Issues is to me at least funny bad. Not to mention that one clip of the Morning Mash Up playing bleeps during the chorus.

      Delete
    4. By that I mean the game they play where they take a song and put in bleeps at a random part of the song. Seriously, even now it's the first thing I can think of when I hear the post-verses (not the chorus, I meant).

      CAUSE YOU DON'T
      FUCK ME
CAUSE IF YOU DID BABY I WOULD FUCK YOU TOO

To me the song becomes ten times funnier if you look at it like that, as wrong as it sounds. xP

  4. And just a heads up for Adrian AND EVERYONE (Yes, EVERYONE, INCLUDING MYSELF) in the blogging community: get ready to start searching for Taylor Swift pictures in the coming weeks, because it's ALMOST CERTAIN (and I'm emphasizing these two words so everyone can prepare) that her new single, Look What You Made Me Do, will be #1 within the next few weeks or so on BOTH the Weekend Countdown AND the American Top 40. AGAIN, it's going to be #1 within the next few weeks. So, brace yourselves.

  61. #1 song this week one year ago: Can't Stop the Feeling! by Justin Timberlake (10th and final week at #1)

I remember how everyone went crazy when this hit #1 again that week, especially after it had been playing less that week. Many were not happy about it. Even Adrian commented on that, and even after all of that, he somehow never got sick of it, which he does deserve credit for. Yet Graham and WAMB10 I don't know if they'll ever like it again, sadly.
